What do I do if my pet has passed away at home?
If your pet passes at home, the first thing to do is take a moment to compose yourself and reflect on how much you loved your pet. This is a very difficult time for anyone. We are very sorry for your loss and are here to help. You can rest assured that your beloved pet can remain in your home until we arrive.
If you have other pets in the house, they may come over to say goodbye to their deceased sibling. This is perfectly normal and helpful for them to understand what has happened.
Following their passing, your pet companion’s body will naturally relax. It's common for their eyes to remain open, and they may release their bladder or bowels. Placing a potty pad or towel under their hind end can help maintain cleanliness.
It may comfort you to wrap your pet in a blanket and place them in their bed with one of their favorite toys. Your beloved pet can remain there until aftercare is arranged.
We can pick up your pet from your home or you may bring your pet to us if you choose. Call or text us at 401-373-0650 to make arrangements. We will get back to you as soon as possible. If there are specific items you wish to keep, such as a collar or ID tags, please remove them before entrusting your beloved pet to our care.
*There is no risk for your pet companion to lay at rest at home if moved to a cool, dry place for up to 12 hours. If for some reason, transportation of your pet cannot be arranged for longer than that, you may want to bring your pet to your veterinary clinic/ER and have us pick them up from there.
